About

KOKO is the next generation online journal for the Shared Campus. It is an independent academic publication dedicated to the investigation of theories and practices of alternative knowledge systems that explore the relations between media and expression, time and space.

To this aim, KOKO activates the potentials of visual, audio and text-based formats – traditional and non-traditional – as next generation means for research production.

KOKO encourages experimental speculative research beyond the limitations of disciplinary perspectives or conventional formats to facilitate ideas, positions, and contributions into diverse dimensions of knowledge.

KOKO seeks to publish new research that promotes a culture of sharing, open distribution, and the on-going exchange of ideas, without losing sight of rigorous academic practice. It engages in the creation of a body of critical and reflexive contributions – in any form and/or medium – with a breadth and depth of thought that will produce new knowledge, creative methodologies, original applications, and substantiated understanding. KOKO not only challenges and re-considers traditional research, and publication formats, but aims at establishing alternative new standards, conventions, and protocols in academic publishing.

Journal Setup

The online format of KOKO allows to digress from the common traditional journal structure/operation, e.g. the sequential publication in volumes and issues, the acceptance of papers by set deadlines only, the setting of temporary themes for specific volume/issues only etc. Instead, right from the start, KOKO launches with five themed “spaces” that are all concurrently open for submissions, and will continuously update upon positive review of newly received contributions.

While each space is “there” (=visible) from the beginning, only those that attracted a critical number of three accepted contributions will be “opened”. Over time each space will grow – likely at varying speed.

All submitted materials will be reviewed/refereed by different processes depending on the state-of-progress of the research – see here for more information on the reviewing process. Creators will be notified of the comments and publication recommendation they received from the reviewers, and may withdraw the contribution at this point if they choose to do so. Otherwise, if approved by the creator the contribution will be published online within one of the KOKO’s spaces.

Additionally, (registered) readers of contributions will have the opportunity to leave their own ratings and written comments. The average of those reader scores are equally attached to each contribution, thus establishing a “social recommender” system, in parallel to the “editors’ review”.

House Rules

We would like to take this opportunity to lay out some rules governing any contributions to KOKO, including form submissions, comments, links and the like.

It is the purpose of KOKO to provide an open access platform for academics, professionals and the general public to share, exchange, develop and discuss thoughts, concepts, experiences, and findings related to the themes covered in respective spaces through texts, images – still or moving – and sound, and we will do our best to create an adequate environment to achieve this intention.

We want the atmosphere of this space to remain community minded. Therefore we thank you for respecting the views expressed by others. We will be moderating this page and removing content that
